Wanted: Dryer That Works

Today our dryer stopped working, we think it is the motor. We bought our GE washer and dryer one year and three months ago, and we didn't purchase the extended warranty (because every time we do the item does not break until after the extended warranty has expired and we have wasted our money) and of course the regular warranty was only for the first twelve months.

We have had no problems with the washer or dryer until yesterday. My husband's family has been doing laundry all day, every day...I'm not even sure where they are getting all the stuff they are washing. It's almost as if they are washing everything in their luggage other than the clothes on their backs...every day. I have had to practically race them to the machine in order to do my usual one load per day! Well, I guess besides doubling or tripling our electric bill running the dryer all day long also broke the thing. They took it all apart today to try and fix it with no luck, so it looks like we will be buying a new dryer. Funny thing is the dryer being busted hasn't slowed the laundry down one bit. Now there is laundry hanging to dry all over my house and even laying in the grass in the backyard.

My husband is upset, I am upset, we are both more than a little stressed and we are ready to have our house back, hopefully in one piece minus the dryer. We are going to have to do major clean-up and even paint repair (I have never seen so many black marks on the walls) after his family leaves, plus buy a new dryer. Plus we are going to have to purchase the new dryer on credit and that is definitely not helping our debt payoff! It would be nice if someone offered to chip in to replace it since this happened when they were using it, but no such luck. I love my husband's family almost as much as my own, but this is just too much.

You are more generous than I would be--I wouldn't have let them stay in the first place. I'd tell our family that there's a nice hotel right down the street. :-)

I'm sorry things are so hectic right now. I hope your household goes back to normal soon!

Sometimes I wish I could say that, but I never do. I would feel so guilty if I ever did that I don't think I could look them in the eye. :)

Three people left tonight, two more leave in the morning, and the rest will leave Wednesday so it will finally be just our little family again soon. That will be a nice feeling, although I know in a month or two we will be missing everyone again.

I just wanted to suggest that you try the freecycle in your area for a new dryer before buying one. It may not be the greatest, but it would get you through until you could save money for a new one. That sucks that your dryer broke :(

Wow, that is crazy. We have had our washer/dryer for 6 years now with now problems. I bought a used dryer in college for $75 and it lasted me longer than I needed it and I passed it on to someone else and it lasted them longer than they needed it too. (They also passed it on--who knows where it is today?) Maybe you could consider buying used for right now to help save your budget?

We have been looking on Craigslist and Ebay for used dryers. The only problem is that we will have to rent a truck to pick it up, and we will have to pay for gas to and from where we are picking it up and our house. We figured with those costs we would be close to spending the same amount that we would on a new dryer and we wouldn't have any warranty at all on a used one.
