First Spending Tally of the Year

January 1st through January 11th

Groceries: $160.83

Household supplies/ toiletries: $22.98
I've included diapers under this category but we shall begin potty training next month so I anticipate that won't be an enormous expense this year. Yay!

Eating out: $86.28
This total included four coffees. I've already decided to start bringing tea to work with me. I'm also cutting out coffee creamer this year. We have a Starbucks at our store (where I work) and as much as I generally like Starbucks coffee I can't drink it black. The ones they choose to keep brewed are always too bitter.

Also, the eating out expense is WAY too high already but we went to one of my husband's favorite Mexican restaurants and spent $46 on one meal! This same restaurant does free kids meals on Sunday's so we've already decided we will not be eating there again any time soon unless it's a Sunday. I have a hard time paying more than $30/ $35 at a restaurant.

Stuff: $16.22
I spent $6.90 on a puzzle, $9.32 on Christmas items on clearance: wrapping paper, bows, lights, a decoration for Abe's room next year. I think there was a bit more but I can't remember what...

Clothing: $13.65
Two pair of pants on clearance for Abe.

Grand Total for 11 days: $299.96

Average daily spending: $27.27

Average daily spending rules recap. I do not include any bills in the daily spending. I also do not include gasoline. My kiddos are homeschooled and its my budget. I make the rules. I don't include school expenses in the average daily spend: books, curriculum, crafting supplies, classes outside of the home, field trips. I do however limit what I consider a school expense. If we purchase something on a field trip for example that would still be normal spending. I also don't call fun or unique outings field trips unless there are other students along. I won't exclude anything purchased for baby Wren on schooling terms because she's only one. Even though she is always learning she is not currently being schooled. That would be cheating.

The baby is a darling little lady now

January Numbers Are In

This is the first real "Numbers are in" post I've done in a long time. Spending was pretty high this month BUT at least I accomplished my goal of tracking it all again.

Food grocery spending was a bit higher than normal (we tend to average $12 a day). There certainly wasn't any food stocking up done but I think we ate a bit healthier than normal. That always raises costs a bit especially when I have to factor in my husband randomly bringing home healthy items here and there that cost a pretty penny. Ugh, he does not know how to be frugal!

I don't think we did bad at all in the food out category.

The pets category consisted of one bag of dog food (with a free one in tow). Since I don't include medical in the average daily spending I have NOT been tracking our eldest dog's insulin and syringes expenses here.

I did some stocking up in the toiletries and cleaning categories. The stock up does raise spending for this month but will help in months to come.

And I had to buy new pants for work (in the clothing category) and I picked up a few really good deals on clothes for the kiddo.

Food Groceries $397.27: an average of $12.82 a day
Food out $73.76: an average of $2.38

Pets $29.15: an average of 94 cents a day
Stuff $12.93: an average of 42 cents a day
Toiletries $24.93: an average of 80 cents a day
Clothing $36.87: an average of $1.19 a day
Cleaning and house supplies $65.78: an average of $2.12 a day

Average daily spending for 2017: $20.67

It was a pretty good month here at the $12 a day household but goodness it was an expensive one (more like $21 a day) and it's pretty hard to believe that it'll be February already tomorrow. Wow!

Two week spending report

Two weeks in, almost. January has been cold (duh, right), icy, and busy.

Yesterday little Abe SHOULD have had his first swimming lesson since summer. He and my husband went to the YMCA. Little Abe got all ready, changed, showered, they sat down at the pool and then someone told them that lessons were canceled because school had a snow day. I guess you could call it an ice day. Almost all the snow melted Wednesday and we'd had freezing rain all night. The whole world was covered in a VERY slick blanket of ice and so, No school. We didn't know school was canceled.

I'd bought a small toy for Abe Wednesday if swimming lessons went well Thursday. (My child is very shy with strangers) My husband gave him the toy even though lessons were canceled. Well, that was a waste of $6. Anyway, that's a long story to report $6.

The spending categories I record here are as follows:
  • Groceries
  • Food out
  • Pets
  • Stuff
  • Toiletries
  • Clothing
  • Christmas
  • Gifts
  • Cleaning and house supplies
  • Garden

I think everything I spend money on fits nicely into these ten categories. I assign Christmas and Garden their own categories only because I'm interested in seeing where those two things end up each year. I guess you could call those special interests.  The only things I don't tally here are car expenses, educational expenses, and health expenses. Oh, and of course bills. Everything else I spend money on gets reported here. My husband's spending on himself is not included.

So far this month I've spent in the following five categories:

Food Groceries $164.20: an average of $12.63 a day
Pets $29.15: an average of $2.24 a day
Stuff $10: an average of 77 cents a day
Toiletries $24.93: an average of $1.92 a day
Cleaning and house supplies $44.93: an average of $3.46 a day

Average daily spending for 2017: $21.02

Looking at the short list of categories I'm happiest to report that there's been no spending in the food out category over the last thirteen days. No coffee shop coffee. No pizza (except homemade). No food or snacks out. That's always a fun accomplishment.

The other thing to note is high spending in toiletries and cleaning supplies. I have stocked up on some things this month but the stock up makes me so happy. Being the frugal gal I am there are some things I hate buying not on sale when they run out. Toilet paper (which I have not stocked up on yet) and laundry detergent are two of the biggest annoyances. Whenever I have to purchase either of those things full price because we've run out I get so beyond annoyed. I've gotten a pretty good stock pile of laundry detergent this month at a pretty great price. There won't be any full price last minute detergent buying here anytime soon.

A portion of the toiletries spending this month is face soap for my husband. He uses a certain kind/ brand and I never know when he's out (and don't think to randomly buy soap for him). Basically I almost always end up buying face soap for him full price. We now have four containers of it from a pretty good sale so I think he'll be set for awhile.

All in all, I'm really happy with this month's spending so far. Groceries is a tad bit high but we haven't eaten any food out. So I'm calling that a total win. Pets is right on track. Stocking up on toiletries and cleaning supplies. We've a free bag of dog food from finally hitting the buy 12 get 1 free deal. And there would be spending in the Christmas category but I  purchased $35 worth of stuff on clearance with an $11 store reward making it all free. Great way to start the year!

You know one thing that is kind of strange, despite inflation and adding a person to our family our average daily spending on food groceries has been pretty darn close to an average of $12 a day for over five years. Hmm, I guess I aptly named this blog oh so many years ago. Hehe!

July Numbers are in

Average Daily Spending for July: $19.82

June and July were a whirlwind of schedule changes, job changes, changes, changes, changes, and loads of good old fashioned summer fun. I purposed to stay on top of spending in June but I completely lost track. Like, completely. I can't say that I spent an outrageous amount just that I did not have the energy, time, or attention span to stay on top of keeping track.

I've managed to scrape together a pretty accurate account of spending for July but I know there are a few purchases here and there that I don't have record of and can't remember (the one downside to paying with cash). I think we're just about used to the new jobs, new schedules, and figuring out how to get through each day with a few marbles left in the end. Most days.

I need to set some serious budget goals for August. At the top of the list is just to get back to tracking every penny that goes out. I don't really want to put in place a super strict budget but I do need to set a reasonable one and maybe shoot for specific spending categories.

I'm really not upset about where I'm at with spending for the year. The grocery average is a bit high at $12.44 a day. I'd like to come in under $12 a day for the year on that one (that puts me about $81 over budget for the year; not bad). My initial goal for the year over all is anywhere under $17 a day for total spending. Currently I'm at $18.43 a year ($260 over budget) so my under $17 is still reasonable but cutting it really close. I might have to think about revising up to under $17.50 a day.

All in all I'm pretty happy with where the spending is at. The changes in June have filled our home with considerably more joy and contentment. July was a fabulous month full of so much sunshine, fun times with friends, and summer excitement galore. I anticipate that August will be equally as wonderful; it's a time for blueberry picking, harvesting in the garden, more sunshine and warmth, hopefully some nice long walks, and ideally lots of really special time with family.

May Numbers are in

Closing out April my average daily spending for the year was at $19.08. It's now down to $18.15 a day with an average daily spending in May of $14.53. Essentially I spent $4.55 a day less in May then I have the other 121 days of this year.

While I had set a budget of $448 for the month, was trying really hard to stay within that, and thought I had, I'm pretty terrible with math and somewhere along the way missed something. I'm actually $2.41 over budget. The math doesn't lie so I'm over budget in reality but as far as I'm concerned I made budget this month. (I know, cheater cheater; I don't care. I'm extremely happy with where I landed).

Mission accomplished in May!
Average Daily Spending for May: $14.53

Groceries $320.74: that's an average of $10.35 a day

April Numbers are in

Catch 22, perfect storm, call it what you will the last two months have been very trying for me. Feel free to call me a wuss, or a weakling, or whatever you'd like but I know my limits and I have a very difficult time operating past them. I've worked extremely stressful and labor intensive jobs over the past 8 weeks, above and beyond the hours I have set as my availability. The good news, we've had extra income. The bad news, I'm terrible at sticking to a financial plan when I'm overworked (or any plan for that matter).

Budgeting, eating healthy, being healthy, maintaining my job, taking care of my home, raising my son, being a decent wife to my husband, and maintaining my sanity all take a lot of effort. I will be the first to tell you that often times I see hard working 40+ hour a week moms doing it all. I can't understand it and it makes me feel like I'm missing some sort of piece to the me puzzle. I can't do it all. Then you see the stay at home moms that are just as busy, just as tired, just as go, go, go as the 40+ hour a week moms. That at least gives me some perspective. When asked what I do I tell people sometimes that I'm a stay at home mom that works part time. That's what I'd like to believe. That's where my heart is. None the less, these past two months my job has been very demanding and I have not been a stay at home mom that works part time. I've been a mom trying to juggle all the same balls while working way more then I'm capable of and hardly seeing my husband at all.

I have not been exercising, or stretching, or drinking enough water. I have hardly been doing any extras with my son. I have not been eating great and have been rush, rush, go, go, go, getting poor sleep, stressed to the max. My body is screaming at me. I hadn't been blogging or reading. Again, I know my limits and I've exceeded them. My spending rundown for March and April fully demonstrate my exceeded limits. The other good news is that it looks like the huge storm of giant jobs at work has passed (fingers crossed). If not, and this pace keeps up I will have to drop stores though. But for now, I think the insanity is behind me. I'm looking forward to returning to life as normal.

All the sob story, is mostly for my own reflection. When I look back on March and April of this year and think, "how in the world did my spending get away like that," I'll remember the clip strip resets and the Goody hair accessory resets and the jumble of paint department and DIY dept. resets all at once. Plus this and that and every other thing that my office wanted done NOW.

I am SOOOOO happy that the long winter is behind us. I am SOOOOO happy that the spring rains keep falling and the buds on all the trees are blooming. I am SOOOOOO happy that these past two months of chaos are behind me. I'm looking forward to May flowers and fun challenges, challenges that I get to pick, not just demands that are beyond my limits.

February Numbers Are In

I can't believe it's actually happening. February is finally ending... right? I mean, only one more day!!!

These last two weeks have been considerably better then the first two. There is no denying that. The fourteen goals to redeem February helped me to power through. But I've still been in a bit of a winter daze. Not quite so down but definitely dazed. Spring is rapidly approaching. We've been finding fresh (un-frozen) air through sporadic bits of stubborn late winter blizzards. Sunshine has begun to re-emerge from hibernation. Ahhh, signs of life are returning to planet earth and February, dear February is finally about to close.

I way overspent in January. The February budget was set at $436.18. I went over budget this month as well but I did more stocking too. In January I stocked up on about four months worth of toilet paper, dish washer detergent, and laundry detergent. This month I stocked up on at least six months worth of shampoo and conditioner. Thus, I'm once again not fretting so much about the overage even though I could have done better. The average is still up for the year but considering that my goal is to come in under $17 a day for 2016 I came pretty close for the month of February itself.

And our grocery budget that hovers really close to $12 a day is a little under this month. I'll take little wins anywhere I can get them!

January Numbers are in

Well that month flew by. I can't lament it's passing however because we are now that much closer to a new spring. My budget this month was $526.69 and I went WAY over it. Total spending for January was $673.73. Wow!

I spent almost $60 on clothing this month. Generally I spend very little in this category so that's A LOT and I spent almost $50 on stuff (anything that doesn't fit into one of the other spending categories). That's a really high number for that category as well but I purchased a booster car seat today for little Abe (that he'll use later). That took up almost half the "stuff" spending this month. The pet category came to almost $80 which is also SUPER high but I bought a bag of dog food right at the beginning and right at the end of the month. That generally doesn't happen. I also stocked up and bought about four months supply of toilet paper, laundry detergent and dish washer detergent. Those purchases should bring the next few month's spending down a bit.

January averages and spending categories
Groceries $374.95: that's an average of $12.10 a day
Food out $15.33: that's an average of 49 cents a day
Pets $79.79: that's an average of $2.57 a day
Stuff $49.65: that's an average of $1.60 a day
Toiletries $43.76: that's an average of $1.41 a day
Clothing $56.29: that's an average of $1.82 a day
Gifts $8.18: that's an average of 26 cents a day
Cleaning $123.40: that's an average of $1.48 a day

Average daily spending for January AND for 2016: $21.73

My goal for the year is to come in under an average $17 a day spending. I think it's safe to say that I'm still on track.
