Yesterday I was craving a Jimmy John's sandwich something fierce. (this is not a sponsored post. I've never had a sponsored post) Yesterday was a planned no spend day which I'm in desperate need of because my spending is out of control this year. I cannot remember the last time I had a Jimmy John's sub but I came SO close to driving over there and getting one for me and one for little Abe (my hubby was sleeping).
I came to my senses and decided that I ought to nix the no spend day and go to the grocery store rather than give into my craving and head to Jimmy John's. Little Abe and I trucked over there just for sub fixings. Of course we came away with more then just sub stuff but it was a little win none the less. I would have spent about $12.49 at Jimmy John's on just sandwiches for me and the kiddo. Instead I spent $9.05 on sandwich fixings, enough for five or six really yummy big subs.
Lettuce $1.19
Tomato 37 cents
One pound ham $4.99
Six pack sub buns $2.50
We had all the condiments and TONS of cheese at home
It would not have been a catastrophe if I broke down and went to the sub shop for dinner. But you know what, I'm really happy that I didn't.
I like those little self victories. Ironically, I had Jimmy Johns yesterday after a frustrating meeting when my driving coworker decided we needed some comfort food. She splurged on chips and I on a pickle. I don't think I've had a Jimmy Johns in 9 months-maybe longer, and it was so good, but not any better than if I had made my own sandwich. today I did just that-spicy red pepper hummus, ham, and American cheese on 12 grain bread-no pickle, but a banana. Yesterday, $8.03, today probably $1.75.
ReplyDeleteWhat an incredibly strange coincidence. Haha! I think it's been at least a year since I've eaten there. I really cannot remember the last time.
DeleteIsn't it amazing the price difference. I mean, I get it. The restaurant is in the business of serving people and making money. But still the difference amazes me.
I love a good homemade sub. So delicious! Just don't forget the mayo and onions! Good way to resist. However, if the craving is still there, just give in and get it before it snowballs. That's happened to me before.
ReplyDeleteIt may come back but very fortunately the craving is totally gone.
DeleteCongratulations on your self control! It is only Thursday and I have already eaten out twice for dinner.
ReplyDeleteI think at least one of those times was for a very special occasion though :)
DeleteNow now....let's hope SOMEBODY out there DOES give into cravings JJs since my daughter manages a Jimmy Johns. Lolz
ReplyDeleteJimmy Johns has seriously DELICIOUS subs so I think a lot of people will be giving into that craving :) She has a cool job!
DeleteWhen I lived in Seattle I used to stop by Jimmy John's to buy the bread. The store near me sold the day-old baguettes for 50 cents apiece.
ReplyDeleteThey were just a day old, i.e., not stale. Soft and yet chewy, just like the "fresh" ones. They turned a bowl of soup into a nice summer and were also good in the toaster oven and then spread with my homemade blackberry jam. Or I'd cut one up into thick cubes, let them sit out a day or so and make bread pudding with them.
The only thing I didn't do with 'em was make sandwiches. But maybe you could? That is, see if the JJ in your neighborhood sells yesterday's rolls, and then put your supermarket fixings inside.
(I found your blog through SonyaAnn at A Mom, Money and More.)
Thank-you ever so much for stopping by! And for the idea, terrific. I wouldn't have thought of that. It's been ages since I was in there but they did and I can't see why they still wouldn't sell the day old loaves. That would totally bring a homemade sub up a notch or three. Great idea!
