The Garden

I am continually amazed at the garden. Today I took the pruning sheers to the tomato plants. They are covered in fruit and I read that side shoots (just stems with leaves that don't produce fruit) should be pruned off and that each piece of fruit should be in the sun, not covered and shaded by leaves. Well my plants are way too close together, were covered in leaves, and most of the fruit wasn't getting any sun. I hope I didn't shock the four big fellows but I can see all my fruit now and all of my fruit can see the sun. (also look at the growth of that sunflower in just 10 days!)

The fact that just a few months ago I planted these four small seeds in some dirt in an egg carton that sat on my kitchen window sill and now I have these enormous healthy plants that are covered in green roma tomatoes just astonishes me. I intend to keep gardening through the years and I wonder if the miracle of life that's contained in simple seeds will always seem so miraculous to me. I am thoroughly amazed by it.

These are the crazy tomato plants up close

  1. Don"t cease to be amazed-fresh produce is one of God's gifts, and if you are blessed with getting a personal hand in it, a double gift. I just got back from the coop and farmers market and just purchased a lovely tray of zucchinis for $3.00. We will grill some up, and I will save some to shred for zuchini fritter sliders like Ruby Tuesdays used to have on their menu. I'm about to make some cinnamon roll dough and then a loaf of bread in the bread maker, and tomorrows meals will be incredible. I envy your delicious tomatoes and would probably hoard a few for my bread if I had them.

    1. Thank-you. Mmmm, your treats sound heavenly! I have not baked anything with zucchini yet this year. I think I will need to get working on that asap :)

  3. You are very gifted. While my tomato plants are growing, I decided that I should add the little fencing that I have to help hold them up and broke off the biggest tomato that was growing. Drat! My poor plants, their problem is me. LOL

    1. As you can see my plants are tied to the fence with twine, all over the place now. I had no idea the plants would get so big. Last year my tomatoes (different kind in a different spot in the yard) were at least a fifth of the size. I will admit I've had several tragedies with mine this year. More than a few little green guys have been knocked off while pruning or watering or tying up and several have been "accidentally" picked by the 2 three year olds that play in my backyard on a regular basis.
