Saving Money Oops

I ran out of face lotion a few days ago. I feel like I've had the bottle that just emptied for years. It lasted a long time and I loved the stuff BUT it costs $16. I actually spent a few days deciding if I'd purchase another for $16 or try something new for less.

I think you can pretty easily guess that I went for a cheaper face lotion. Ugh, the stuff smells like a 95 year old lady. It seems nice. My face was smooth and moisturized (I have fairly dry skin AND we're in the midst of dry, dry, dry, arctic blast winter of the century). But its stinks. My face smelled horrid all day after I used it.

The moral of this story is don't buy the "cheaper" stuff without smelling it first... although there was a seal on it. Hmm, still make sure you smell it first.

And a bonus photo from the snow adventure:

  1. You should try coconut oil! It smells wonderful and works beautifully.

    1. Hm, I'll have to look into that. Thanks for the suggestion. I love coconut but I don't really love the smell. I live near a large lake and many sunblocks have coconut fragrance to them so... this is crazy but whenever I smell coconut I can faintly smell cigarette smoke as well. It's a weird association that I just can't shake from my childhood.

  2. Have you tried coupons. I've seen this one lady get gobs off groceries, amazing how people can save money like that.

    1. I can very shamefully admit that I'm clueless when it comes to coupons. I don't have a functioning printer and I'm under the impression that most people print coupons off at home. I don't have a cell phone so I can't do digital coupons. Apart from purchasing a news paper I don't know where else you'd find the little buggers (except for the free mailings but those are usually for restaurants and we do use those).

  3. I can so relate. I love the one I use, but it is very expensive. What I do to try and get it down to a reasonable amount is constantly look for a coupon and sale, especially at CVS. It usually brings it down to about $9, which is a lot, but better than the original price.

    1. I've literally had this face lotion so long that I was delusional and thinking I'd never have to buy more. I'm TOTALLY going to watch it now and snatch it next time it goes on sale. It's not a major brand but it's bound to go on sale at least once every 3 months... thats one thing good about working in the stores, I'm pretty good with sale patterns.

  4. Get some of the good stuff next time its on sale. If you use one $16 bottle a year that's 4 cents a day, and if it lasts longer even better!
