Garden Pizza Night!

Tomato tally is at 29 beautifully ripe red tomatoes from the garden so far this year.
Today was the first time I've ever peeled tomatoes.
Oh my goodness it is so much easier than I'd anticipated.
I learned that I LOVE crushing tomatoes with my hands!!!
That's what the tutorial said to do to make the tomato sauce.
This evening we ate really, really, REALLY yummy pizza for dinner.
The homemade spaghetti sauce wasn't amazing but the pizza sauce turned out awesome!

The title kind of makes it sound like we ate a pizza covered in veggies. Hehe, nope, just cheese but the pizza sauce, now that's what I call garden fresh!

Spending rundown today: $0. NO SPEND day 61 for the year.

My budget for the month is $436 which leaves $211.78

Average daily spending for 2015: $18.26

  1. There is absolutely NOTHING like eating something you have grown yourself!!! I love how you have little Abe help in the kitchen - another thing I would have done differently - I didn't want anyone "underfoot" and missed all those wonderful times with them!!! Keep doing exactly what you are doing - you are a fantastic mom!!!

    1. Thank-you Sue
Ah ah, you know you could still cook with your kids :) might not be as adventurous and I'm sure it'd be much less messy but I bet you could have a good time!

    2. Maybe Christmas cookies? I still like making Christmas cookies with my mom and sister.

  2. I make pizza sauce in big batches, and use a sauce that's (I think, at least) good for either an easy spaghetti or a pizza base. http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/fresh-plum-tomato-sauce-recipe.html. I skip the parsley. I make a giant batch, freeze in small portions, & use it to either top pizza or add meatballs while heating & serve with pasta. Last night I had a scene very similar to yours, but my helper was an 8 year old boy. ;-) I'm also too lazy to skin the tomatoes, but we all still survive. ;-)

    1. Now THAT is a phenomenal idea! Two sauces in one and I love the food network so I'd probably be set just following the link. Thanks for the GREAT suggestion!!! Honestly, I was amazed at the tomato skinning process. It took me 10 seconds per tomato. I mean that's like nothing right! You're supposed to score them, boil them for about 40 seconds, dump them in an ice bath and then peel them a few seconds later. I boiled four at a time and skinned the four right out of the ice bath while I was boiling the next four. I could honestly not believe how easy and fast it was.

  3. That sounds a lovely thing to do. You have a real skill at making life exciting for your son.

And I'm jealous of all those ripe tomatoes - mine are nowhere near! There is nothing like the smell of a freshly picked tomato

    1. Thank you! I do love the smell too. It's so fabulous, just knowing that we grew them ourselves and picking them warm from the yard, they smell almost as wonderful as fresh cut roses (one of my very favorite smells).
