My father in law went goose hunting a few days ago. Today he stopped by with at least five pounds of goose for us. His exact words were, "we shot 27 geese." I have no idea how many people he went hunting with but that sounded like a lot of geese to me. I said, "Wow, that's great. That's a lot." To which he responded, "Yeah, should have been more."
My husband won't eat it but I personally could not be more happy about free meat, free VERY sustainable, healthy, NOT factory farm raised, in fact lived a completely natural life in the wild meat. Oddly enough wild goose tastes and looks a lot like beef. You pretty much treat it like steak but there is an intensely gamey after taste. Little Abe and I don't mind it one bit though. I'm very much looking forward to goose for dinner tomorrow with fresh veggies from our garden!!!
So, can someone tell my why it is that people feel the need to stop by when you're in the middle of cleaning out the entry way closet and the front bookcase (or any such project)? I had stuff thrown all over the living room from sorting things out and it didn't really look like I was in the middle of cleaning. It just looked like a complete disaster. To make matters worse I've been doing a really great job of keeping the kitchen clean (something I've been quite proud of lately) but the sink clogged yesterday and I spent an obscene amount of time unclogging it. My goal was to not have to run to the store for drain-o and by golly I met my goal but it took some work and I did not clean the kitchen yesterday. The kitchen looked today as if it hadn't been cleaned in weeks.
And has anyone else successfully turned away an in law who came bearing gifts of free meat because, "no, you can't come in my messy house as I'm in my pajama's, not wearing a bra, and am in the middle of chasing down my kid while making dinner and mixing up cookies from scratch? (I might have looked like one of those scatter brained mom's you see on internet memes (yes, I did)) All I ask is that you call first. wah, wah, wah. Seriously is anyone else ready for stop in visitors at all times? I NEVER am. Just call first please. Yeah, a little humiliated tonight. And it's not like I'm going to say thanks for the geese but let me explain to you why my house is in shambles. Nah, I'm not good at making excuses.
Spending rundown today: Groceries for $30.70
My budget for the month is $513.62 which leaves $392.58
Average daily spending for 2015: $18.04
I am always in my "cleaning clothes" sans bra when I am home so I just don't answer the door. Now in our case it is NEVER anyone with free food....mainly salespeople and nice Mormon boys "spreading the word", so I don't feel guilty - my friends know if they want to stop by to text me so I can get "decent" :)
ReplyDeleteHow did you get the sink unclogged?
I never answer the door either. We get lots of solicitors and nice Mormon (and Jehovah's witness) folks. When the dogs started barking (haha, I never hear them knock but the dogs ALWAYS do) the drapes were wide open on the front window and little Abe was standing there looking out. I was cooking in the kitchen so I go "is someone real actually here?" He says, "Yeah, I think it's Grammy's car behind ours out there."
DeleteOH NO! I can't make my in laws just stand on the front porch while I ignore them. Haha, right... Yeah, and then there's the free food thing. I didn't know he had the goose but there's no way I'd not answer the door or even say something like, "sorry you can't come in, there was an explosion in there."
The sink started to drain really slow about three days ago and then two days ago it was hardly draining. First I took the p trap off to see in something was stuck in there (you know that curved pipe at the bottom under the sink). Nope. Then I started plunging. I got it draining again and then it clogged back up. So I plunged it more, got it unclogged again and ran hot water down it for quite awhile.
DeleteThen I bleached the sink (it's an older porcelain sink and gets gross). Seriously it took forever to get it unclogged.
It positively drives me crazy getting drop ins, but I wish I wasn't like that. I'd love the srlf and home confidence of those that like anyone to stop by. Part is appearance and part is just mindset/feeling a loss of control of my space.
ReplyDeleteI a big part for me and TOTALLY for my husband is the feeling of loss of control of our space. We really don't have people over. I wish we did every once in a while but I know my husband feels like our home is sort of a sanctuary from the outside world and he really REALLY like not having people over. So then when people do just "drop it" WOAH that's a huge interruption. It'd be easier for me though if I got a call just so I could put on blue jeans and a bra :) I'm never ready for drop ins.
DeleteAt my age I really don't care what anyone who drops in cares or thinks about my housekeeping skills(or rather, the LACK thereof). It's not like they are perfect either, right?
ReplyDeleteTake me as I am or leave me be.......
That's the only way to be really! Ugh, I am NOT there yet.
