I picked out two school items for him while we were there as well and then I notice a Jake and the Neverland Pirates kite. I've seen this same kite at the stores I work in for at least four times the cost (this is a true dollar store we shop at where everything in the store costs $1). I'd been thinking of making a kite with him but I really couldn't pass up the $1 Jake kite. In the end we left the dollar store spending $4.24. And after all of our shopping for the day was complete my little guy got to fly his brand new Jake kite with his cousins. It's the first time he's flown a kite and I realized I cannot remember the last time I did either. We all had a good deal of fun with this little treat. It was well worth the $1.
I had budgeted $60 for today's shopping trip. With the dollar store spending my total came to $63.27. I will not even consider complaining about going $3.27 over budget. I'm pretty sure I got all the necessary items to pull off another 3 or 4 no spends after today. So we're looking good, and another dreaded shopping trip is over! Since I wanted pizza so badly last night I bought some of thee cheapest frozen pizza's at the store (they are actually the ones we like best) for tonight's dinner. A successful shopping trip, a fun stop at the dollar store, an afternoon at the playground (sort of, the ground was too slushy and muddy to play on the actual toys), and a super easy yummy dinner; I'd say today has been a success all around!
Average daily spending for 2015: $17.49
$185.93 left to spend in March
I like your cotton bar jar idea for motivation. And you can't beat the dollar store. Kids love that place!
ReplyDeleteIt seems to work really well with him. He only has two chores right now and he's a very young three year old but he really enjoys watching the jar slowly fill with cotton balls and he gets very excited to pick out his reward once they reach the line.
DeleteYou did a fantastic job - and I don't think $3 over is anything to worry about - especially considering all the fun you had with it :) I think Abe and I are a lot alike - my kids say I am the only person on the planet who gets excited to walk down the office supply aisles and look at all the new pens & things :)
ReplyDeleteI wish I had spent the quality time with my kids that you are spending with Abe - we were both so busy working full-time jobs to pay for all the stuff we "had" to have, we missed all that one-on-one time. By the time we got our act together the kids were older & were off with friends, band, sports, etc. Enjoy every second!!!
I could work more but I really do want to spend all the time I possibly can experiencing life with him. Time goes by so fast, too fast. The money just isn't worth it, you know.
DeleteI'm feeling SOOO jealous! I love flying a kite!
ReplyDeleteIt was really delightful! I don't think I've flown a kite since I was very young. I'm so glad that he's now had the experience (and of course we'll get out with it much more this spring).
DeleteI've read several pages of your blog, and even though you say money is tight, and I imagine spending money isn't something you want to look in to, you sound like you'd be a wonderful teacher. So many children could benefit from your insight and perspective (I loved what you said about learning is about the process over the product). We have a full-time art teacher on our campus, and the ways you are teaching your son to experience his world are some of the ways she teaches art to our students. I returned to college for a teaching degree at the ripe old age of 36 (my first foray into college was for a business degree) and completed a master's degree at 47 - married, working full-time, and raising 4 sons. I'm not saying that to be bragging, but to say it is doable. You'd be an awesome teacher, I believe.
ReplyDeleteThat's an incredibly huge compliment. Thank-you! I did not choose to go to college after high school but I did take an AP art class in high school that I got 4 college credits for :) So that's always made me feel like I have a little college experience, haha!
DeleteRight now I'm enjoying every single minute with my little one so that I never really think about further schooling or a career even. I really appreciate the compliment though and the thought. thank-you :)
I always let my daughter play with scissors and when she for to preschool, she was very advanced with both the scissors and fine motor skills. Unless the scissors are super sharp and made for cutting fabric, they will be fine with a little supervision. Sounds like a fun day.
ReplyDeleteThe ones he picked out are definitely kids scissors (cheap kids scissors but still). My sister in law who is a teacher said that using scissors is a great way to develop fine motor skills too. She said I could start him using scissors anytime and I was actually surprised. I honestly think I would have waited at least another year for safteys sake but he does great and I do watch him the entire time.
