Saving money is mentally exhausting!

Yesterday was no spend day 19 for the year. Today should have been 20 but I did not plan for the two cakes I have to bake tonight for a family gathering at my mom & sister's house tomorrow. This means I need to shop today. In order to pull off several no spends after that (my goal this month) I need to make a strategically planned list of stuff we need for the next several days or I'll inevitably end up shopping again. Now, please allow me to whine. I'm in no mood to plan a shopping trip right now. Wah!

To top it off my husband just used the $9 reward I earned (from buying all that meat the other day) to purchase a CD. It wouldn't be as frustrating if he'd let me know that he "needed" the CD and planned to buy it and had let me clip a $7 reward for that stupid CD. Now my $9 reward is gone and I can't return the CD he purchased so that I can clip the $7 reward on it (and then I could buy it again with the $7 reward attached to it) because he used my $9 reward to purchase his dumb CD. I'd lose the $9 reward if we returned the CD. Okay, if you're still reading at this point I applaud you for making it all the way through that obscene paragraph. Well done! And now I will reiterate: Saving money is mentally exhausting.

This day is not starting out right! Now I must go to work, try and plan out a financially savvy shopping list, fight my way through the Friday shoppers (honestly, they scare me.... remember I work at the supermarket. Friday shoppers are scary) and make it home with my sanity. I'm tired.

Happy Friday! Well, I guess that's a happy side note. It is Friday. I certainly can't complain about that.

Average daily spending for 2015: $18.22
$327.78 left to spend in March

  1. I understand your frustration. I scrimp and save and all our meat is only bought if reduced, carefully cut coupons, then he goes to the store for milk and comes back with a $9 jar of olives. Kind of hard to stay on budget. These things come up once in a while unfortunately, best just keep the peace :) You are doing very well - best to make those homemade cakes rather than store bought ones - way cheaper so don't be too hard on yourself.

    1. Oh wow! Sounds exactly like my husband. Here I am pinching pennies with all my might and he'll come home from work with a $6 bag of chips or some exorbitantly expensive gourmet pickles. Gah! I turned a new leaf this year and I'm trying my best to let him do his thing and only politely comment on his spending if it seems absolutely absurd. But losing a $7 reward (which basically means losing $7 cash) because he can't just tell me he "needs" a stupid CD... okay, okay, I've recovered. sigh.

  2. I think I've read before that you use mPerks from Meijer? You might try emailing their customer service about the CD purchase - I've done it before on things that Ive bought, only to discover that I could have earned a reward for it. They've been nice about it, and have given me credit for rewards after I've purchased things. It's worth a shot!

    1. That is an excellent suggestion. Yes, I do use mPerks. I shop almost exclusively at Meijer and my savings rate is around 40%.

thank-you! In my frustration I had not thought to call but it certainly won't hurt to try.

    1. :) I did survive. And for some reason the stores were really slow today which meant not having to traverse any scary shoppers! I think I did pretty good with my purchases too. Ahh, home sweet home. Now it's time to make some cakes!

  4. You make me smile, Rivulet! But I am not laughing at your frustration- I completely understand how you must feel. Just keep on looking at the many steps you take forward, not the ones that take you back. ;)

    1. I think I redeemed the day. Pretty good shopping trip, considering, pretty good dinner, and one cake is done. On to cake number two!
